Red Sorghum, or Sivappu Cholam, is the pigment-rich cousin of white sorghum, distinguished by its deep crimson hue which signals a high concentration of anthocyanins—the same antioxidants found in blueberries. Biologically, these pigments serve as a defense mechanism for the grain and, when consumed, offer potent anti-inflammatory benefits that protect the body against chronic oxidative stress. Switching to Ayini Red Sorghum is a conscious step toward "color-coding" your health, replacing pale, nutrient-void grains with a robust, iron-rich ancient cereal that builds blood vitality and strengthens the immune system.

About this item

🔴 Purity & Sourcing: Organic, unpolished, and non-GMO. We preserve the vibrant red bran layer, which is the primary source of the grain’s medicinal polyphenols and dietary fiber.

🧪 The Science of Nutrition: Packed with rare phytochemicals and high levels of Iron and Zinc. These micronutrients are essential for hemoglobin synthesis and maintaining a robust metabolic rate.

🛡️ Health Impact: A powerhouse for heart health and glycemic control. The complex tannins in red sorghum have been shown to slow down starch absorption even more effectively than white varieties, making it superior for blood sugar management.

🚜 Heritage & Origin: Sourced from traditional dry-land farms in South India where the red variety is celebrated for its resilience. It is a true "climate-smart" crop that thrives in sun-baked soils without the need for synthetic chemicals.

🌰 Taste Profile: Offers a bolder, nuttier, and more deeply "toasted" flavor than white sorghum. It has a firm, satisfying chew and adds a beautiful rustic aesthetic to any meal.

💡 How to Prepare / Use (Step-by-Step)

Red Sorghum is a dense grain with a protective outer skin; proper soaking is mandatory to achieve a tender, digestible result.

The Long Soak: Wash the grains thoroughly to remove any natural dust. Soak the Red Sorghum in plenty of water for 8 to 12 hours. This long duration is vital to soften the antioxidant-rich bran and make the iron more bioavailable.

Cook/Method: Use a water ratio of 3:1 (water to sorghum). Due to its density, we highly recommend using a pressure cooker. Cook for 5–6 whistles on medium-high heat, then allow the pressure to release naturally to finish the softening process.

Serve/Enjoy: The cooked whole grains are excellent in "Buddha bowls," as a base for spicy South Indian stir-fries (Sundal style), or mixed with yogurt. When milled into flour, it creates incredibly flavorful and colorful Rotis, Puttu, or Dosas.
